The “Black Joy is Lit(erature)” Workshop Series was created by Dr. Omni to assist Black, undergraduate research mentees/interns in being successful applicants for graduate school by providing education in conducting literature reviews, writing annotated bibliographies, working with APA citations, along with creative and scholarly writing. Attendees will attend a facilitated book club utilizing the foundational text, The Politics of Black Joy, written by Lindsey Stewart. Upon completion of the book, students will write four annotated bibliographies based on the references cited in this book. One of the four submissions will be based on Dr. Stewart’s book. As a fun twist to the book club experience, students will share their thoughts and writing with the author when she visits Black Joy is Lit(erature) at the end of the Fall.
By the Spring semester, students will then use these transferable skills to write annotated bibliographies about nature’s influence on the spiritual, social, emotional, intellectual, and physical well-being of Black people. Students will leave this year-long experience with the confidence to communicate their discoveries as well as the ability to write academic papers that expand the scholarship and conversations of Black Joy with a particular emphasis on Black Joy and nature.
