Literacy and Hope Foundation was formed to focus on the need for literacy in many low-income communities. Why reading tutors? Reading is fundamental to independency & life success and 82% of low-income students can't read at grade level by the end of third grade. From Kindergarten to third grade students are learning to read and after third grade, they are reading to learn. They cannot read to learn if they cannot read.
The Department of Justice states, "The link between academic failure and delinquency, violence, and crime is welded to reading failure." Over 70% of inmates in America's prisons cannot read above a fourth-grade level.
· 85 percent of all juveniles who interface with the juvenile court system are functionally illiterate.
Our goal is to provide free tutoring to low-income public-school students
in St. Louis, MO area at least 1-2 times per week. Our focus is
on students who are reading below proficiency for their grade, especially in kindergarten - 3rd grade, so they do not become one of the statistics above
and those in upper grades who have fallen significantly below their grade level.
They will receive one-on-one tutoring by a trained professional
tutor in a location that is convenient for the family. In addition, each
student's parent will receive skills on how to advocate for their
child's academic needs.
We started a pilot with our tutoring program in June 2023 with a 12th grader who couldn’t read. In two months, with the introduction of phonemic awareness, sight words, self-esteem building, and love; she is beginning to read four-letter words. We have also seen success with our parent advocacy program. We partnered with a parent of a 4th grader in April during his IEP meeting and was successful in communicating with the school his needs, discussed changing his IEP program and now he is excited about attending school and has had success in the classroom and resource room. His parent has asked us to participate in his next IEP meeting.
When you sponsor a child, you will get progress reports on this child and have the option to send them encouraging notes.
Our goal is to launch this program in January 2024! We already have 5 students waiting to be supported. Our financial goal will support 10 students.
