Making life better for animals and people in our community.
Gigi was surrendered to Midcoast Humane after her owner lost his housing and was forced to give her up. Gigi came in with a softball size mass between her legs, arthritis, severe dental disease, and covered in flea dirt. She has impaired vision due to cataracts. Upon intake, our team noted, “Dog is in very poor condition... It appears that she has not been to a vet in years, if ever.” Given her age and medical issues, many shelters would have euthanized Gigi on intake. However, we noted that she was able to walk, eat, and drink, and there was every indication that she could enjoy a fulfilling life as a healthy and happy pet with appropriate medical care. Gigi had a full dental scale and polish, and seven infected teeth were extracted. Gigi’s mass, weighing a half pound, was removed, which greatly improved her comfort. She received flea and tick treatment as well. Gigi made it through her operation and subsequent recovery, and is spending her golden years in the care of a Midcoast Humane employee. She loves to go on walks and is enjoying life to its fullest. Recently, she has been camping in Acadia, relaxing at Reid State Park, and enjoying the music at several L.L.Bean Summer in the Park concerts. She has many years of quality life ahead of her, with a family that loves her dearly.
