Helen Woodward Animal Center is a private, non-profit organization serving San Diego County where "people help animals and animals help people." With 14 unique programs all dedicated to that mission, the Center provides lifesaving rescue and medical care to thousands of orphan pets yearly, animal assisted therapy to children and adults in need, and humane education to thousands of children, teaching them about the importance of fostering the animal-human bond.
Snickers arrived to Helen Woodward Animal Center in dire need of help. She was born to a feral mother who had no choice but to stop caring for her kittens after only a couple weeks. At four weeks old, didn't even weigh a single pound. After a thorough medical assessment by our team, the Center reached out to one our most experienced foster families to provide around the clock care for Snickers. Unfortunately she refused to be bottle fed or syringe fed and after two weeks her condition had worsened. At just six weeks old, she was completely lethargic and frequently vomiting. For such a young, tiny kitten, these symptoms can spell disaster. To prevent the unimaginable, the Center's medical team decided the best course of action would be to give Snickers immediate fluid therapy. Then, they placed her on anti-nausea medication to prevent vomiting, prescribed a probiotic and antibiotic, to ensure digestive wellness, and sent her to foster with multiple types of specialized food. Under the close guidance of our medical team, Snickers' dedicated foster family helped her achieve a much healthier weight and revealed her playful energy! After medical intervention and healing allowed Snickers to reveal the sweet, playful kitten she truly was, it didn't take her long for her to find her forever home. A friend of her foster parents fell in love with the little orange tabby, and adopted her as soon as she was available. If little Snickers did not have the support she needed in such a critical period of her life, she may never have been able to brighten the lives of a forever family. Donations like yours make happy endings possible.
Your gift will help rehabilitate dogs in need like Versace. This Labrador Retriever-Terrier blend was found in a dumpster in Oklahoma, barely moving, on the brink of death. At 2 months old, he only weighed 8 pounds. When he stood up, his front legs bowed, too weak to hold up his skeletal frame. If his emaciation wasn't enough, Versace also had a skin infection covering almost his entire body. Luckily, because of the support of donors like you, Helen Woodward Animal Center doesn't have to make that choice. We are able to act on our belief that all pets deserve a chance at finding a forever home no matter how long it takes to find their happily ever after. With that mission in mind, we provided Versace with two months of medical treatment and the tender care of a foster family until he made a complete recovery. Once recovered, he found his forever home, where he's loved and cherished every day.
