Our Mission

Angels of Assisi seeks to change the traditional definition of an animal shelter by offering services and programs to benefit the community, the people that live there, and the pets they love. The organization operates the largest private animal shelter in the Roanoke Valley, as well as a low cost Community Pet Clinic and farm animal sanctuary. Through the Community Pet Clinic and Adoption Center, Angels of Assisi is able to provide resources to pet owners to keep their pets happy and healthy. The adoption center puts emphasis on these services to help people be able to keep their pets over turning them in to the shelter. Angels of Assisi strives to be a resource to the community and also offers services to area and rural shelters to help end the euthanasia of healthy, adoptable pets.

about 6 years ago — South Carolina

The conditions we encountered in South Carolina were inhumane for both people and animals. Our first reaction is always to be angry at the people, but this elderly lady was also suffering. Hired help was not properly caring for for her or the animals. Our rescue truck headed back to Roanoke with 42 dogs and 31 cats aboard. These animals needed extensive medical treatment and emotional care due to the neglect they have faced for years.

Meet Ajax. He is one of 19 dogs and 30 cats that Angels of Assisi received from the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) through a rescue they conducted down in Mississippi. Over 80 animals were rescued from severe neglect in an alleged cruelty situation on the 161-acre property. Ajax, along with other cats and dogs, were found in rusted, old cages covered in cobwebs inside a dark room. The rescue team said there was an odor so bad that it would stop you cold in your tracks. Ajax has had paralysis in his back legs since he was a puppy and is unable to easily move around. He originally had a wheelchair, but as he got older, he simply outgrew it and his owners never got him a new one. Through the generosity of Eddie's Wheels for Pets, Ajax received a new wheelchair to help him move around. Check out the first moments Ajax was in his new wheelchair by visiting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9B5Kl5ETG2A&t=5s

A picture truly does speak a thousand words. Ajax, who is paralyzed in the hind legs, spent time outside today. He was rescued by the Humane Society from a hoarding situation down in Mississippi. The moment he was placed down in the grass, you could tell he was overcome with joy. The area where we were, had a slight decline and Ajax made his way down the entire hill with a giant smile on his face all by himself. When we got to the bottom, all he wanted to do was be right by your side and it seemed like it was his way of saying thank you. Unfortunately, it started down pouring so we had to carry Ajax back, but we look forward to the next day when we can take Ajax back!

Not one animal left behind in the Lenoir County shelter. We received a call from a shelter facing almost certain destruction from Hurricane Florence. The city was unable to provide resources and shelter staff were begging for help. We sent our rescue team down the next day and were able to clear the shelter of the 70 dogs and 120 cats and bring them on their way to safety. Some were just making a pit stop in Roanoke where the Humane Society of the United States continued transporting them North, while others stayed here and found their homes. We could not do this without the community support we receive and everyone who answered our call that week to help clear our shelter!

Rosie, who was brought to us by Animal Control as a stray. She was scared and severely malnourished at the time. We designed a feeding plan for her to put on weight again. After a few days, signs of improvement already began to show. Her tail started to wag more, and she tried to give kisses to everyone she possibly could. We are so fortunate to have met Rosie and can’t wait to get to know her even more as she continues her journey.
