When we first brought Dudley home for adoption, he would growl at me whenever I entered the room. He preferred my wife, and he was pretty leary of me. I respected his position and let him be. Although I always acknowledged him, I knew this adjustment would take time. Slowly, Dudley dropped his fear of me. It took quite a while, but I knew he had some history that made him act that way. Some movements made him cower. I knew that he must have been abused or mistreated. I accepted that he and I had to find our common ground. Even giving him treats did not help close the gap. But with patience, understanding, and unconditional love, we made it through this adjustment period, and he accepted me (and I, him). We are now best friends. Inseparable. He greets me every morning and brings me a toy to show his love for me. He also nestles into my lap any chance he gets. He sleeps with me too! I love him with all my heart. Adoption is a strange and exciting process. You need empathy, patience, and unconditional love because you do not know his life before finding his forever home. Also, we knew Dudley had never been taught how to be a pet. He yearns to please us, but it takes much training and time. Dudley has grown leaps and bounds through a lot of work and help from our trainer since we brought him into our home and lives. I would do it again at the drop of a hat. I love him more than I can express. Adoption is special; every dog deserves a chance to be loved and start anew. Dudley is living proof!
