Our Mission

Sound Home Sanctuary is a New York microsantuary founded on the idea that all animals deserve a life of soundness - to be healthy, peaceful, and secure. We rescue, foster, place, and adopt small animals in need of homes and rehabilitative services, in partnership with other animal rescue organizations. The organization was conceived in 2020 by founders Jacquelyn Lewis and Ed Janoff in Port Washington, NY on the shores of Long Island Sound (get it?). Over several years leading up to the launch, the two founders provided individualized care services for more than 20 animals!

We are currently partnering with local animal hospitals to foster and place stray kittens, cats, and other small stray mammals found by good samaritans. We are also able to refer individuals caring for animals in need of rescue to other organizations that can offer additional help. We have plans to expand into a standalone rescue with intake capacity in the future.

Our Impact

Stache (named for his adorable mustache) was discovered orphaned outside with a sibling who sadly did not make it. He was only a few days old, severely dehydrated, and near death himself when we took him into the kitten nursery. We used our neonatal expertise — and a little bit of magic! — to get him healthy. Stache stayed with us and was bottle fed until he grew strong. He was adopted with Hanson and they are both living their best lives in NYC!

Tuxedo boys Gouda and Goat Cheese were found separately as stray babies who needed extra TLC. They were both extremely shy and under-socialized but, as we discovered, sometimes all you need is a friend! Once we put them together, both boys found comfort in each other’s company, and they swiftly came out of their shells. They were adopted as a bonded pair by a wonderful family and are now living hap-purr-ly ever after.

Hanson was found by a good samaritan and brought to a local animal hospital with a severe injury that required amputation of her right front leg. This kitten was also feral and terrified of humans. With diligent care and patient socialization, this orange girl healed and adapted beautifully to being a tripod. She learned to love humans, too. She’s now being spoiled like she should be by her loving adopter in NYC.

Jordan had his work cut out for him — and us — from the start! This beautiful kitten struggled with stubborn ringworm (a fungal skin infection) but had a bad reaction to the oral medication required for treatment, so we diligently bathed him with special shampoo every day for months until he finally tested negative for ringworm. He also battled a second, life-threatening infection that required days of hospitalization. Despite all of this, Jordan was determined to thrive, and that he did. We cared for him in our kitten nursery until he was strong, and then he went to a phenomenal adopter.
