Our Mission

The AAKOMA Project is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that works to address the unmet mental health needs of intersectional youth and young adults of color (including LGBTQ youth and those with disabilities). The AAKOMA Project leverages a multifaceted approach to operate at three levels – raising consciousness among individuals, empowering people with accessible tools for ongoing mental health management and changing systems to promote youth wellbeing and provide better care. Founded and led by Dr. Alfiee Breland-Noble, AAKOMA envisions a world where EVERY child, teen, and young adult (inclusive of all points of diversity) feels the freedom to live unapologetically and authentically within an environment that allows them to rise and thrive.

On May 18, 2022, MTV in coordination with the Biden-Harris Administration and 18 leading mental health nonprofits, convened the first-ever Mental Health Youth Action Forum in order to drive culture from awareness to action. Dr. Alfiee, founder of The AAKOMA Project, was a leader of one of the youth action teams and The AAKOMA Project was one of the 18 leading mental health non-profits. Dr. Alfiee and her team of young adults, The Hidden Healers, pitched ways to make mental health more accessible and how to destigmatize the topic of mental health.

Team AAKOMA is a group of bright and strong youth who work with The AAKOMA Project to help with speeches, events, etc. and they provide a teenage lens to important topics focused on mental health. Team AAKOMA was established in March of 2021 and every two years we plan to bring in new students who have fresh ideas. So far, Team AAKOMA has been instrumental in helping the AAKOMA Project with events such as the MHA back to school event on September 20, focus group for the Ad Council and more. A big accomplishment for the Team AAKOMA kids was participating in a focus group for an upcoming commercial the Ad council will be releasing. In this focus group, Team AAKOMA members gave their opinions about language, presentation and style when presented with a TV ad created by the AC that will premier later this year. Their feedback will go towards making sure the main message of the AC’s commercial is culturally and socially appropriate and makes everyone feel seen, heard, and valued.

At the AAKOMA Project, we have been fortunate enough to receive funding and grants that allow us to create and execute programming unlike any other. One of the greatest accomplishments we have at The AAKOMA Project is our Free Therapy program for people seeking mental health aid. Our program provides 5 free sessions of virtual mental health therapy to youth and young adults of marginalized backgrounds. Recently, our founder Dr. Alfiee, attended the United Justice Coalition event hosted by Rocnation, the social justice initiative from Roc Records. At this summit, Dr. Alfiee had the pleasure of meeting surviving family members of Black men who were devastatingly shot by the police. Dr. Alfiee was able to connect with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s daughter, and thus, connected with these families. Through this connection, she has been able to provide mental health help to these family members who need socially conscious support.
