Founded in 1980, the Écomusée du fier monde works to emphasize the history and heritage of the Centre-Sud district in Montreal, a microcosm of the Industrial Revolution in Quebec, Canada, and North America at large in the second half of the 19th century.
Since its creation, the Écomusée has developed a museum practice based on outreach education and the setting up of participative projects. It fulfils its mandate in close collaboration with the populace of the district, as well as with its institutions and cultural and community organizations. It is also active during reflections and discussions that concern the present and future development of the Centre-Sud.
It has earned numerous awards of excellence or mentions from organizations specializing in museology and heritage: Société des musées québécois, Canadian Museums Association, Les Arts et la Ville, Association québécoise d’interprétation du patrimoine, Montréal Architectural Heritage Campaign, Sauvons Montréal, etc.
