THE VIRGINIA HOSPITAL CENTER MEDICAL BRIGADE'S MISSION IS TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF COMMUNITIES IN HONDURAS. FOUNDED IN 1999, TO PROVIDE DISASTER RELIEF IN HONDURAS, THE BRIGADE NOW DIRECTS ITS EFFORTS IN PROVIDING COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AND INTERVENTIONS SUCH AS CLEAN WATER, EDUCATION, NUTRITION AND THE TRAINING OF COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKERS. IT CONTINUES TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF SERVICES CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE IN HONDURAS AND TO COLLABORATE WITH LOCAL PARTNERS.

Communities tell us what they need. Volunteers are confident they are traveling responsibly and with great impact. Our donors can be proud that 100% of their donations support on the ground programs. Our mission is to end extreme poverty and violence through education and youth empowerment. Honduras has the worst gang epidemic on the planet. Each year, thousands of children join gangs like MS-13 and Mara 18. Honduras is also the 2nd poorest nation in the western hemisphere, where 66.2% of its people live in poverty. With access to a quality education and jobs the Honduran people can fight back. What began as a small penny drive in 2006 grew and grew, eventually raising hundreds of thousands of dollars together through small fundraisers.

Empowerment Plan

We're a Detroit-based nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the homeless community. We hire homeless women from local shelters to become full time seamstresses. These women manufacture a coat that transforms into a sleeping bag, which is then given out to homeless individuals living on the streets at no cost to them. We believe in giving second chances to those who want it, and providing warmth to those who need it.

Watts Of Love

Watts of Love improves the health, safety, and education of families by offering clean renewable solar lighting. Where electricity is unavailable, families depend on costly and dangerous kerosene. Kerosene is toxic and flammable and causes burns and upper respiratory disease.

AHope For Children

There are one million orphans in Ethiopia, many of them fending for themselves. AIDS incidence in the general population is about one in six persons and the epidemic is growing. A similar proportion of children orphaned by AIDS is also infected with HIV. There are about 120,000 new cases of HIV infection among children each year. The country is overwhelmed by the needs of their orphans.

Bernheim Arboretum & Research Forest

To strengthen the bond between people and nature through education and research. Isaac W. Bernheim established Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest in 1929. I. W. Bernheim (1848-1945) was a German immigrant who settled in Kentucky. From a humble beginning as a peddler, he became successful in the whiskey distilling business where he established the I.W. Harper brand. Grateful for his good fortune, he gave Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest to the people of Kentucky as a gift.
