KOLKATA SANVED

Our two fold mission: To harness the power of dance and dance movement therapy to heal, empower and transform individuals into active citizens and change makers. To build the ecosystem for DMT for Change across Asia and create leaders and changemakers in the field, especially from underprivileged communities. KS's work addresses three Sustainable Development Goals: Gender Equality, Eradication of Poverty and Good Health and Well Being.The core of KS's work takes place in community settings. This consists of the conducting of Dance Movement Therapy (DMT) sessions for survivors of trafficking, survivors of sexual violence, people with mental illnesses and other marginalized communities. The NGO has created a unique, culturally contextualized module of DMT known as Sampoornata (fulfillment). KS's DMT-for-change model redefines a survivor's relationship with her/his body and helps her/him to overcome trauma, guilt, and shame. Sampoornata is designed to be a vehicle for empowerment: DMT process enables them to form a vision for their life and live with confidence and positivity. Along with this KS has developed its dance based module on sexual and reproductive health and rights that aims to install positive gender relations amongst adolescents. In this way, KS is contributing to the Sustainable Development Goal of Gender Equality. Women and girl children are empowered to overcome social stigma and restrictions and make independent choices. By encouraging women and girl children to seek employment, KS contributes to the Sustainable Development Goal of eradicating poverty. Another way in which the NGO contributes to this goal is through its 'childhood to livelihood approach'. Through this approach, individuals who have gone through the DMT process and who want to take it up as a profession go through a two-year Training of Trainers (TOT) programmed, after which they can be employed as Dance Movement Therapy practitioners. In this sense, they use the arts for economic progress. Additionally, the participants of the TOT programme go through capacity building, from which they get a range of skills that enable them to be employed in various other jobs. Most importantly, the TOT programme creates a new set of change makers from amongst the community. KS contributes to achieving the Sustainable Development Goal of Good Health and Well Being, not only by helping individuals overcome their trauma but also by working in community, institutional care and Health Care Settings. KS conducts DMT in marginalized communities, mental hospitals for people living with mental illnesses. . The activities and aims of the DMT sessions are specially modified to suit the clients. Sampoornata has contributed greatly to developing services that help expand our understanding of mental health and aid in the development of cost effective, sustainable services that are less intrusive and easy to replicate across populations. WORKING POPULATION: Kolkata Sanved believes that everyone has the right to live a life of dignity. Often there are many structural barriers that deprive marginalized communities of this basic entitlement. Therefore Kolkata Sanved aims to reach out to these communities to ensure their rights. This includes Working with children, youth and adolescence: Childhood is a period with potential the potential to influence developmental outcomes. KS work's work with young people include helping them optimal development outcomes. KS works with all categories of young people. Its general well being program is aimed at children in general whereas its direct intervention programs are aimed at children who are at risk. Groups falling within this category are 1. Children and youth living in: Red light areas Railway platforms Rural and urban slums Government and NGO-run shelter homes Children in conflict with Law School children 2. Working with survivors of trafficking exploitation and violence: Most survivors of violence undergo intense trauma, KS helps to empower survivors through their trauma based interventions so they can reclaim their lives. This works on fulfilling the goals of gender equity and good health and well being. In lieu of their work KS found that a lot of violence happens in the context of gender based discrimination. For this purpose KS launched the module on sexual and reproductive health and rights that enables adolescents to work towards the goal of gender equity. This unique model uses dance as a tool of education and awareness. 3. People living with mental illness (PLMI): KS works with people living with mental illness to help in the process of their recovery. Through its general well being program KS ensures PLMI are able to gain the life skills necessary for reintegration. 4. Secondary stakeholders and beneficiaries include, care providers, academy participants, researchers and stakeholders within the government sector. KS also reaches out to other civil society members through campaign.

North West Democratic School

North West Democratic School (t/a Sligo Sudbury School) was founded in 2017 to address the growing need for an alternative to mainstream education for children and teenagers. We provide an environment for self-directed education for children aged 5-18 years, supported by a muti-discipliary staff team. We currently employ 9 part-time staff members. Standardised education and the curriculum taught in schools today do not adequately support diversity and inclusion. The emphasis on competition, the one size fits all approach, the drive for higher standards of achievement and performance effectively exclude a large portion of the population from the possibility to succeed, and discourage the qualities of collaboration, empathy and kindness that are so needed in our society. Our social mission is to address this issue by giving young people autonomy in a supportive learning environment and fostering the most volitional and high quality forms of motivation and engagement for activities, including enhanced performance, persistence, and creativity. We are a democratically run organisation which provides children with a real voice in their own education and the running of the school, fostering empowerment and a sense of personal responsibility. Students are not obliged to follow a set curriculum but are fully supported in designing their own learning experiences, enabling them to grow in confidence and take on challenges that are timely and at the right level for them. This model of education is particularly suited to children who do not fit the confining criteria and standards of mainstream and who are therefore disadvantaged by the system itself as their emotional, social, and learning needs cannot be adequately met within the mainstream model. Our mission is to provide a safe environment where young people can engage in self-directed learning and democracy, where children are free to choose their own learning goals and pursue them at their own pace, while participating in a community of self-governance and justice where each member's voice is equally valued and heard. We believe that there are many approaches to learning and that each child can be supported in their chosen path. We are committed to providing an alternative model of education where children have choice about their learning, freedom to go about their business, and time to explore and create without pressure or constraint. We aim to safeguard an environment where autonomous, self-directed, intrinsically motivated learning can flourish.

Artolution

The Artolution is a community-based public art organization that seeks to ignite positive social change through creative, participatory and collaborative art making. We facilitate projects around the world that connect diverse peoples in order to address challenges that they face daily and in the future and to develop common social objectives. Our projects bring together children, youth, families, artists, educators and community groups. Our founding objective is to address critical issues related to conflict, trauma, and social marginalization by cultivating sustainable initiatives that promote reconciliation, healing and community empowerment. Our process empowers artists, youth, and communities to be agents of positive social change, explore critical societal issues, and create opportunities for constructive dialogue. Artolution collaborative art projects engage youth and communities that have faced social exclusion and trauma, including refugees, street youth, the incarcerated, people with physical and mental disabilities, and young people living in areas of violent conflict or extreme poverty. These projects have been organized and facilitated in partnership with local artists and educators, grassroots community groups, schools, religious centers, museums and international institutions in over 20 countries across Latin America, Africa, Australia and New Zealand, North America, the Middle East, Europe and South Asia. We utilize visual public art mediums such as mural art and community sculpture, as well as street performance genres including dance, theatre, and music. In our workshops, participants explore important community issues. Supported by us, they collectively decide on the subject and content of the artistic production, culminating in the collaborative creation of works of public art. Through this process, we emphasize the building of positive relationships among participants, skill-building, the sharing of knowledge and the encouragement of community creative activism.

Karuna Deutschland e.V.

Karuna Deutschland is committed towards ending caste-based discrimination, dedicating efforts for poverty-alleviation, and ensuring equality in India and Nepal. Our mission is to serve individuals and families of the poorest communities in India and Nepal. The women and children as well as people from lower cast backgrounds come under the most vulnerable population in India and Nepal. The former "untouchable" castes are still suffering from social exclusion and violence and also form the largest chunk of 'ultra-poor' in these countries. It is extremely difficult for them to access healthcare, education, housing and a dignified livelihood. Dalit women and girls particularly are subjected to gender-based violence and exclusion. Although caste-based discrimination has no legal premises, the stigma attached to the lower castes in India and Nepal hinder their dignified participation in all spheres of life. They are pushed further behind by a variety of forces such as existing discrimination, inequality, poverty, illiteracy etc. Therefore, we endeavour to remove the root causes of discrimination, exclusion and poverty. We seek to run our projects and activities based on the principle of inclusion, justice, diversity and equality in order to drive a positive as well as holistic change at the community level. The foundation of our work lies in engendering a dignified life for the people; helping them build a better future for themselves as well as empowering them to take their destiny into their own hands. To elicit lasting solutions to the problems we intend to address, our approach is based upon self-help, self-determination and self-reliance at the community level. The principle of 'leaving no one behind' as mentioned in the Sustainable development goals is enshrined in our core values. Changes often happen at the local level. Creative and innovative solutions are pertinent to reach our goals. Our activities are thus built upon a wealth of local skills and knowledge. We seek to understand the vulnerabilities, strengths and needs of our target groups. Evidence based approach rooted in in-depth analysis, research of ground needs and realities is extremely important for us to promote accountability and responsibility. The four pillars of Karuna Deutschland's work are made of Education, Health, Dignified Livelihoods and Gender Equality. Idjwi Island Education Fund

The Idjwi Island Education Fund is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with the mission of providing a better school for children in the village of Buhumba on Idjwi Island in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Idjwi Island, located in Lake Kivu on the eastern border of the DRC, has seen a dramatic increase in its population in recent years, much of which is the result of refugees fleeing violence in Rwanda and the DRC. A substantial number of these new residents are children, including many orphans. Approximately 400 children attend the existing primary school. This makeshift school is overcrowded, has a leaky roof, and does not provide desks or even books for the students. In 2009, Them Nyamunongo, who grew up on Idjwi and now works in Washington, D.C., returned to visit family on the island. During his stay, he gave gifts to children that he met in Buhumba. As he spent time with the children, he learned about the extremely poor conditions at the school, including how it has become overcrowded due to the increase in refugees and orphans. The children told him that their true wish was for a school with a roof so that they were not sent home every time that it rained. When Them returned to Washington, D.C., he and his wife, Safi, approached a friend who is a director at a local preschool. From this meeting in late 2009, the Idjwi Island Education Fund was formed. In just over eighteen months, the Idjwi Island Education Fund has obtained property in Buhumba for the new school (which was donated by Them's family), met with and conducted a needs assessment with the director of the existing school, and provided some interim support for the facilities at the existing school. The Fund has recruited a board of directors that includes professionals with experience in international development and project management. The Fund has also conducted a series of fundraising events through which it has raised more than $15,000, in gifts ranging from $20 to 1,000, from more than 100 different donors. With this foundation in place, the Fund is intensifying its efforts on the design program for the new school, interviewing representatives of other non-governmental organizations with experience with similar projects in the region, and identifying local organizations to collaborate in the building process. The ultimate goal of this effort is to provide improved facilities, desks, books, and a safe-haven for more than 400 primary school children in this isolated community.

Kenya Keys

Kenya Keys unlocks the potential of students in impoverished Kenyan communities, raising awareness and bridging cultures to provide education, mentorship, leadership development and girl empowerment opportunities. In the rural Kinango District of Kenya there are many obstacles to education, but there is one organization working hard to remove those barriers for as many young Kenyans as possible. That group is Kenya Keys and its purpose is to unlock the enormous potential of young people in Kenya. Kenya Keys is a vibrant demonstration that one person really can make a big difference. In June 2005, Rinda Hayes and her daughter traveled to the remote village of Bahakwenu in the impoverished Kinango District in Kenya. Rinda was stunned by the extreme poverty she found in Bahakwenu. She was also inspired by the tenacity of the children in the village, who longed to get an education. She had never observed such a single-minded desire to learn. Perhaps no Kenyan impressed Rinda more than Joseph Mwengea, the Headmaster of Bahakwenu Primary School. Joseph is an intelligent and driven man and a determined advocate for his students. As he and Rinda met together during her first visit to his village, he pleaded with her to help him help the students of Bahakwenu. He watched bright and capable students leave primary school with little or no hope of attending secondary school due to their inability to pay the required fees. After her visit, Rinda was determined to share her stories of this community and the people who had so impressed her with her friends in the United States. She believed she could find caring American individuals and families that would be able to provide financial support for top Kenyan students, enabling these students to complete a secondary education. The Kenya Keys sponsorship program began with 14 students. Five years later it became the nonprofit organization of Kenya Keys. Kenya Keys has supported hundreds of students - to secondary school and now into college and university. And that's not all. Kenya Keys' work has expanded to include multiple worthwhile related programs. Kenya Keys works with local communities to improve educational infrastructure and resources, such as libraries, dormitories, classrooms, desks, and more. The Kenya Keys Boards of Directors (one in the U.S. and one in Kenya) also provide financial and other support to grassroots organizations run by local Kenyan community leaders and councils. Each of these components of Kenya Keys' efforts in rural Kenya is described more fully in the following section. Everything Kenya Keys does is guided by its founding principles: First, education is the primary key to unlocking potential, both for the individual and for the community. Second, cultural awareness and exchange is vital and enriching for all participants. We live in an increasingly connected world, and exposure to new cultures and ideas is key to creating understanding and appreciation for one's own culture and for the cultures of others. Third, opportunities, not handouts, are what make a lasting difference. There should be no giving of things that run out or wear out. Giving such things only increases dependency, invites discontent, and isolates the givers from the receivers. Instead, giving should empower the receiver and provide an enduring benefit. Fourth: volunteerism is fundamental to the success of an organization. Nonprofit groups run by volunteers remain strong and dynamic. Volunteerism also connects global citizens in a meaningful way. Fifth, education provides the best defense against the ranges of poverty and hopelessness, and is the greatest catalyst for change and growth. Sixth, all critical decisions should be made by local leaders and councils. Local leaders and community members know their own needs and circumstances far better than any outsider, however well-intentioned. Allowing local people to make key decisions gives them vital ownership and accountability. It also provides the opportunity for these individuals to develop crucial leadership skills. Kenyans will always find the best solutions to the deep-seated challenges in their communities. Finally, education and the development of leadership skills in today's youth is critical to building the future leaders of Kenya.

In order to fulfill our mission we create a non-institutional center where medical, social and psychological professionals work together with representatives of the target group. We have the following activities psychological, medical, social consulting and legal advising; creative art club, seminars and conferences for young people with CHD and healthcare programs. To improve quality of life of children with congenital heart diseases (CHD) and their families and to support their social integration. Part of our mission is to change the attitude and patterns of the society toward people with CHD In order to fulfill our mission we create a non-institutional center where medical, social and psychological professionals work together with representatives of the target group. We have the following activities psychological, medical, social consulting and legal advising; creative art club, seminars and conferences for young people with CHD and healthcare programs. To improve quality of life of children with congenital heart diseases (CHD) and their families and to support their social integration. Part of our mission is to change the attitude and patterns of the society toward people with CHD In order to fulfill our mission we create a non-institutional center where medical, social and psychological professionals work together with representatives of the target group. With the improving of their self-esteem, educational level and supporting their art and creative abilities we decrease the social isolation of heart operated children. Connecting families in our club activities we give them space to exchange experience, find support and feel less isolated Our organization works together with National Heart Hospital in order to secure adequate access to healthcare system for grown-ups (above 18 years age) people with CHD.

Teach First Danmark

Teach First Denmark is a non-profit association founded in 2013 We work to give children in Denmark the opportunity to get an education, regardless of social background. We do this by engaging even more skilled teachers for the primary schools and students who need them the most. Our two-year program is a career in elementary school and in education. It is a community for people who want to contribute to strengthening the future opportunities for all children in Denmark. We work closely with primary schools, vocational colleges, municipalities and foundations. We are independent of political, economic and religious interests and are financed by foundation funds for non-profit purposes. A society where no children and young people are excluded from the communities Teach First Denmark works for a society where all children and young people have the opportunity to develop their full potential, for the benefit of themselves and the community. We mobilize civil society in the belief that positive change is created by engaging and uniting people who want to be something for someone and who want to contribute to the community. We are present where the need is greatest, and we always have the children's interests at the center of what we do. We emphasize building our activities around a broad collaboration, because we are never the whole solution, and because together we can see more nuances and create greater changes. Makomborero

Makomborero (1122176) is a UK based Charity (unincorporated trust) that helps to relieve poverty through education in Zimbabwe, the charity is registered with HMRC for Gift Aid purposes. Funds are raised in the UK, largely from individual supporters, albeit the trust also receives some modest donations from donors in USA, Australia, Europe who are connected to the work. In order to deliver public benefit the charity partners with an entirely separately governed Zimbabwe registered trust/NGO "Makomborero Zimbabwe" - MZIM which receives grants directly from the UK, and fundraises within Zimbabwe and internationally (a Memorandum of Understanding is in place between the two organisations to support governance/control). At present the UK trust contributes c.50% of the Zimbabwe trusts income and operating costs (total annual budget in Zimbabwe is c.$250k pa) The Zimbabwean Trust, Makomborero Zimbabwe, was set up in 2011 by Mark and Laura Albertyn, to provide A-level education to talented students from orphaned and very challenging backgrounds. These students, study their A-levels at our partner private schools, Hellenic, Gateway and St George's, in Harare. The schools collectively give full tuition scholarships for 16 students each year. We ensure that the students are well provided with academic support, pastoral care and love to fulfil their academic potential and hopefully eventually give back to their own communities. The scholarships are life changing, for the individual students and their families. The purpose of Makomborero Zimbabwe is to provide educational support to academically gifted students who might have otherwise dropped out of school, due to the parents' economic hardships or death of a breadwinner in the family. Makomborero provides the financial support and aims to provide a holistic environment for the students to successfully complete their A level education and proceed to tertiary education. The team goes out to 70 - 80 high density and rural schools in Zimbabwe with applications and the students undergo a rigorous testing process. The top 8 students are awarded full scholarships while a further 16 are financially supported through local government schools.

International Education Network dba Palliative Care Network

Mission: Palliative Care Network is dedicated to alleviating the suffering of patients who are combating serious illnesses through open access education for professionals worldwide. Vision: Palliative Care for Everyone, Everywhere Chronic diseases are the leading cause of mortality in the world, representing 60% of all deaths. 35 million people died from chronic disease in 2005. These include heart disease, stroke, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes. 80% of chronic disease deaths occur in low and middle income countries (1). Healthcare professionals lack appropriate training to care for patients as a "whole" and, in particular, fall short in skills to care for patients with diseases with poor prognosis. Quite often, patients receive poor end-of-life care, even in societies with technologically advanced healthcare. Ultimately, patients experience unnecessary pain and suffering during treatment of disease and at the end-of-life. Palliative Care Network (PCN) aims to address pain and suffering more effectively through education. PCN provides a FREE, online, educational platform for palliative care professionals. Registration on the website and access to materials remains free of charge allowing those who have limitations to remain abreast of palliative care trends. Expert interviews, lectures, presentations, posters, etc. are voluntarily shared on the PCN Community. Participants from Harvard share the same platform with palliative care providers from developing countries in Africa, landlocked Nepal and Mongolia, etc. PCN evens out the platform for palliative care professionals worldwide. The multiple projects initiated by PCN not only help the professional community in assisting patients and their families but allow palliative care providers to encourage each other. The PCN Directory lists professionals from around the globe interested in collaborating to exchange knowledge and information. For example, using the PCN Directory, an Indian physician connected with an American social worker to share cultural issues, myths, and norms about palliative care, grief, and loss. Additional success stories include collaborations with a professor of sociology, nurse, and a producer/director.

Mavi Kalem Association

Mavi Kalem was formed at the aftermath of the 1999 earthquake, and founded in 2000, to respond the needs of the earthquake affected and migrated communities in particular of the disadvantageous groups of women and children in health and education. Since then, it has been implementing projects mainly assisting women and children since its establishment. Projects involving the empowerment, skill development, health services and information sharing have been implemented throughout 2000-2002 in Düzce area, mainly assisting women and children after the earthquake. Since 2002, Mavi Kalem has been implementing projects and activities concerning; educational support, awareness raising on health standards, awareness raising on domestic violence, psychological support, consultancy on health and legal issues for both local and migrated women and children in Fener/ Balat district in Fatih, Istanbul, addressing the needs of children, women and girls of the local community migrated from all regions of Turkey and since 2014 the Syrian children and women in Fener-Balat were included in its beneficiary group. Activities such as Turkish language courses, socialization activities with local population, help in admissions to schools and other official and administrative actions, and psychological support were provided to Syrian children and women. Mavi Kalem has worked toward the Syrian refugee influx related issues since 2011, by conducting needs assessments and gap analysis in Hatay, Gaziantep and Sanliurfa without-camp populations. Also on the national and international level; women' rights and health rights, children's rights, wide spreading of minimum standards in humanitarian aid, youth exchange programs are included in Mavi Kalem's actions. Dissemination and advocacy for humanitarian assistance standards and principles in disasters, emergencies and migration situations is one of Mavi Kalem's work areas. Since 2001 it has been part of Sphere Project, since 2009 INEE Workgroups and for 2 years now part of CHS Alliance. MAVİ KALEM has held the adaptation of Sphere handbook in Turkish successfully and been in cooperation with Ministry of Health, TRC, municipality health departments for its wide spreading, and implementing training programs. Similarly INEE and CHS basic humanitarian aid principal books have been adapted to Turkish and disseminated at national level by Mavi Kalem. It is one of the founding members of SITAP (Civil Society Disaster Platform, national). Mavi Kalem has organized Women in Disasters and Emergencies Workshop hosting women experts, academics, experienced NGO field workers from humanitarian organizations, NGOs, and women right based organizations in 2016. Gender specific issues, needs, and rights in emergency settings were discussed; field experiences and suggestions for improvement were exchanged toward strengthening and mainstreaming the gender perspective in disaster and emergency response. Mavi Kalem, has also delivered its services and expertise to disaster and emergency or poverty affected locations other than its primary implementation area through partnership with other local organizations, in other districts of Istanbul and other provinces such as during the Van earthquake response. Overall organizational strength and capacity lies within the Mavi Kalem's 17 years of implementation experience with focus on public health and education, disaster, emergency and migration specialization, advocacy of women and girls health rights, mainstreaming gender equality perspective in its implementation, developing and designing projects and programs based on the needs and participation and feedback mechanisms of its beneficiaries, volunteers, and supporters, measuring quality and monitoring and evaluation of impact in action rather than quantity focus, integrity and commitment of Mavi Kalem, at all levels to organization's policies in regards to work ethics, preceding women and girls, and children protection, non-discriminatory approach, preservation of confidentiality and respect for dignity, transparency and accountability, anti-fraud and corruption. Since its foundation Mavi Kalem has been working with international donors and experienced in project budget management, and reporting accordingly. Mavi Kalem's administrative and financial system and its management are executed as per Turkey's finance law and associations' law and regulations. Grant agreements, contracts and partnership agreements are also reflected in its implementation and management. Annually Mavi Kalem goes through financial and administrative auditing of relevant governmental body and also independent financial auditing. Mavi Kalem prioritizes gender equality in the implementation and decision making steps of projects and decides and acts with accountability, transparency, participation and approaches differences equal as principal. Mavi Kalem, being a non-profit civil society organization for which 97% of employees are women, applies positive discrimination to women when recruiting, selecting and determining beneficiaries and target groups to promote gender equality. To eliminate social discrimination during stages of project content, project design and project implementation, working with women is prioritized in determination of the project team and selection of financial experts procured from the affiliated participant organization. In addition to being sensitive to gender discrimination in works and studies, Mavi Kalem acts responsibly and is in favor of vulnerable groups avoiding discirimination based on ethnicity, political views, religious beliefs, sexual identity and race in terms of target groups, beneficiaries and employees. Mavi Kalem does not define itself in politic, religious or ethnical personalities. Freedom, human rights, democratic rights, health rights, public gender equality, women rights, LGBT rights, children's rights and prevention of discrimination are supported. www.mavikalem.org ) In addition to all, Mavi Kalem has started a process of institutionalization at 2015 to improve on its experience in project development and implementation it has built last 18 years and aims to develop and improve its policies based on its long experience.

Born Free Foundation

Born Free's mission is to keep wildlife in the wild. We seek to have a positive impact on animals in the wild and protect their ecosystems in perpetuity, for their own intrinsic value and for the critical roles they play within the natural world. Our consistent motivation and aim since 1984 has been to protect wild animals, whether free living or in captivity. We are dedicated to the wellbeing of animals and humans, recognising that achieving co-existence is vital for the continuation of life on earth. It takes courage and determination to promote the well-being of wild animals who are unable to speak for themselves. Challenging individuals and organisations who stand in the way of improving outcomes for wild animals, local communities and the environment, is not always easy or straightforward. We actively engage in projects that address conservation, welfare, education and policy. Conservation Born Free is committed to our global conservation projects, supporting a vast array of species from lions to elephants, gorillas and tigers, wolves and bears, to name just a few. All of these wild animals face their own particular threats and challenges which we approach according to specific need. This may include addressing habitat loss and degradation, poaching, exploitation and the wildlife trade, conflict, policy failure, or other social pressures. Field conservation only ever has a meaningful impact if it is implemented over the long-term. Conservation often needs to take place in complex socio-political environments, where threats are constantly evolving, changing or increasing in magnitude. Born Free has a distinct track record of sustainable, long-term delivery. We have been supporting Ethiopian wolf conservation for a quarter of a century, protecting tigers in India for seventeen years, and addressing human-lion conflict mitigation in Kenya for over a decade. Welfare Building on over three decades of experience, Born Free's animal welfare programme continues to expose captive wild animal suffering that occurs in circuses, menageries and to animals kept as 'pets' by private individuals. Whenever possible, our expert teams rescue, rehabilitate and provide lifetime care for wild animals who have been treated cruelly or captured illegally. Our ability and capacity to rescue animals, however, is all too often determined by the resources available. Long-term, sustainable investment into our animal rescue and sanctuary programmes means we can help more animals. Education Local communities, far from being part of the problem, are, in fact, part of the solution. Born Free works with local communities to develop trust and strong working relationships through co-operation, commitment and understanding. Our investment in these relationships is vital for a future which embraces human-wildlife co-existence. Our education programmes are popular but currently limited by capacity. We are always seeking to reach more children and communities, and provide extensive educational and life-skills resources, throughout the areas in which we operate. Even small investments in education can have dramatic and lasting results and we would be delighted to talk about how you can support education, community empowerment and social change. Wildlife Policy Born Free's wildlife policy operates at the highest levels, influencing national governments, regional associations and global entities such as the UN. Our work involves detailed research, representation and advocacy at decision-making conferences that set the international framework for the ongoing relationship between humanity, nature and the environment. . This is international work at the top table, where our vision and experience can make a real contribution. The human resources and collateral necessary to influence policy and legislation must match our ambition for a more sustainable, more compassionate, more inclusive world where people and wildlife can coexist. Achieving Long Term Sustainable Results Since our establishment in 1984, we have achieved and continue to develop long-term, sustainable conservation, education, wild animal welfare and wildlife policy projects. Some examples of our achievements to date include: The building of over 300 predator-proof bomas ,night time stockades, in Amboseli, Kenya, which have reduced conflict and contributed to the growth of the lion population from 50 individuals in 2010 to over 200 today. Over 20 years' support for the Ethiopian Wolf Conservation Programme, whose long-term protection and monitoring programme has been vital in sustaining the 500 wild individuals that represent the most endangered canid in the world. The Satpuda Landscape Tiger Partnership brings together seven conservation organisations across central India, and works to protect wild tigers and promote co-existence. Tiger numbers in central India have increased by almost 70% in the last five years through the painstaking work of such conservation organisations. An expanding UK education programme including Creative Nature, our bi-annual publication Hear the Roar, school outreach, curriculum-driven teaching materials, conservation clubs, and the nationwide Great Debate. Since 2014, a growing international education initiative, which now works with numerous schools in many African countries to deliver activities and extra-curricular clubs, introducing over 49,000 young people and rural community members to the wealth of natural wildlife around them and inspiring the conservationists of the future. The Raise the Red Flag campaign, highlighting and exposing the suffering endured by so many wild animals in captivity, has received 35,000 public reports in 20 years. Now sponsored by BA Holidays, the interactive campaign encourages the reporting of wild animal cruelty throughout the world to increase awareness and to enable us to campaign for tougher laws and legal protections. The lifetime care in Born Free operated or supported sanctuaries of 95 rescued lions, leopards, cheetah and tigers along with countless other carnivores, primates, birds, reptiles and ungulates, offering each one the best possible care in a natural environment. Serving as the UK's zoo watchdog for more than 35 years, exposing the exploitation and poor standards that compromise the welfare of wild animals in captivity, and leading efforts to end the use of wild animals in travelling circuses across the UK. Persistent influencing of international and national legislation and policy. Outcomes include an increase of international legal protection for many species, the introduction of EU Zoos Directive, the ending of the keeping of dolphins in captivity in the UK, the banning of wild animals in circuses in several jurisdictions, the introduction of the UK Ivory Act, and the global ban on the international ivory trade, to name a few. Ongoing and effective campaigns to end cruel and unsustainable wildlife exploitation by trophy hunters, poachers and traffickers, and governments. Born Free is driven by world-class professionals.
