The Connecticut Audubon Society conserves Connecticut’s environment through science-based education and advocacy focused on the state’s bird populations and habitats. Founded in 1898, the Connecticut Audubon Society operates nature facilities in Fairfield, Milford, Glastonbury, Pomfret, Hampton, and Sherman, a center in Old Lyme, and an EcoTravel office in Essex. Connecticut Audubon manages 20 wildlife sanctuaries encompassing almost 3,300 acres of open space in Connecticut, and educates over 200,000 children and adults annually. Connecticut Audubon is an independent organization, not affiliated with any national or governmental group. Connecticut Audubon Society’s scientists, educators, citizen scientists, and volunteers work to preserve birds and their environments in Connecticut. Our work includes sanctuary management, advocacy, environmental education and activities at our centers, scientific studies, and our annual Connecticut State of the Birds report.

The mission of Lindsay Wildlife Experience is to connect people with wildlife to inspire responsibility and respect for the world we share. The museum was founded in 1955 by Alexander Lindsay, a local businessman, to teach children about natural sciences, particularly wildlife and their habitats. Over the years, the museum has developed a permanent collection of live, non-releasable native California wildlife and related artifacts. Lindsay is also a leader in the field of wildlife rehabilitation with a full veterinary staff and more than 500 volunteers. It is the first, and frequently only, resource for those who encounter injured, ill, or orphaned wildlife of all species, native mammals, birds, amphibians, and reptiles . During the recent drought years, Lindsay has treated record number of wild animals (more than 5,700 in the first 10 months of 2015). Begun in 1970, this formal wildlife rehabilitation program was the first of its kind in the United States.

Founded by Dr. Hadiyah-Nicole Green, the Ora Lee Smith Cancer Research Foundation is on a mission to change the way cancer is treated and reduce cancer-patient suffering by providing a treatment that is accessible, affordable, and, most importantly, effective. Despite all of modern and alternative medicine’s best approaches, nearly 9 million cancer-related deaths occur every year due to cost, access, and efficacy of current treatment options. Dr. Green has developed a new arsenal in the war on cancer, Laser-Activated Nano-Therapy (LANT). After a single 10-minute treatment, LANT completely eliminates tumors in laboratory mice in just 15 days, without any observable side effects. Limited by funding, not technological advancements, LANT is ready for human trials. The purpose of the Ora Lee Smith Cancer Research Foundation is to move LANT beyond the laboratory and into humans, independent of the pharmaceutical industry with tax-deductible donations. Over 600 million Indians defecate in the open every day because they have no toilet. This practice cripples health, economic, and social outcomes. Open defecation (OD) causes the spread of infectious diseases that kill an estimated 300,000 children under five every year. The economic costs of OD total nearly $54 billion lost each year in India, with rural households bearing the highest per capita loss. Furthermore, women and girls who lack convenient access to toilets often miss school and work while they are menstruating. SHRI ends open defecation in India by constructing community toilet facilities that are free to use. They include eight toilets for women, eight for men, hand-washing stations, and a biogas digester (a large underground tank). Human excrement is stored in this tank where it decomposes to produce methane gas. SHRI uses this energy source to produce electricity, which powers a water filtration plant that uses a patented resin filter to remove arsenic, fluoride, iron, and bacterial contaminants. The resulting potable water is sold for $0.008 per liter, less than half the current market cost, helping SHRI to generate revenue to offset its monthly facility O&M costs. This ensures facility cleanliness, a key predictor of sustained toilet use. Thus SHRI fights alongside rural Indian communities to end open defecation as a key step in the struggle for health equity, and social and economic justice.

The Movimento de Saude Mental Comunitaria do Bom Jardim (MSMCBJ) was initiated in 1996 as part of the outreach of the Comboni Missionaries in the Northeast of Brazil. MSMCBJ seeks to improve the lives of the people of the economically impoverished peripheral regions of Fortaleza, primarily the area of Grande Bom Jardim. To imagine a mental health project in a peripheral neighborhood like Bom Jardim, where the majority of people live in at-risk circumstances - in which extreme poverty, violence, a lack of housing and basic sanitation, street children, and unemployment predominate - is to believe that, even within pain and suffering, we can harvest flowers. That is, personal and social realities can be transformed. The challenge that MSMCBJ has been overcoming throughout its years of community action has been to demonstrate that, through the Community Systemic Approach, working with people's self-esteem results in greater self-awareness, which empowers people to create paths of liberation, thanks to the sense of participation and co-responsibility that MSMCBJ activities favor. Telerik Academy School is a national educational program by the Telerik Academy Foundation. Our mission is to provide equal access to modern tech education to Bulgarian children and prepare them for the digital future. By providing free training in programming and digital science, we help 1st-12th graders develop key digital competencies and knowledge and become bold inventors, digital leaders, sought-after professionals, and active citizens. Telerik Academy School has trained more than 12,000 students to date, equipping them with the key skills for the digital economy and fostering their logical thinking, creativity and problem-solving skills. Trainings are currently held in 102 cohorts in 25 cities in Bulgaria. We aim to further expand our footprint and network of cohorts and reach even more children.

The Ann Foundation is dedicated to improving the lives of children and youth with disabilities and/or from economically disadvantaged backgrounds in developing countries. Through partnerships with local NGOs and educational institutions, we primarily provide educational services including English, computer literacy, and personality development through Skype and other technology. We also support health and humanitarian services through mission trips to developing countries.
