Skills For Chicagoland's Future

The mission of Skills for Chicagoland's Future (Skills) is to create demand-driven solutions for employers to get the unemployed and underemployed back to work. Skills' vision is to continuously meet employers' talent needs to create economic opportunity for individuals who are under and unemployed. While the national unemployment rate has fallen below 5%, there are still over 7 million Americans out of work, and an additional 7.6 million workers are either underemployed or discouraged. Certain segments, such as youth and minority populations, are disproportionately affected, lacking access to hiring networks leading to employment. Skills is addressing these issues by connecting individuals from a diverse set of Chicagoland neighborhoods and populations, to available jobs. While we work in all areas throughout Chicago and Cook County, the largest geographic concentrations of Skills' placements come from Chicago's south and west sides. In 2015, 43% of individuals Skills placed resided in community areas with unemployment rates higher than 20%; 58% of Skills' placed-job seekers experienced long-term unemployment (more than six months). Seventy-three percent of Skills' placements were African-American, 14% were Hispanic, 62% were women, and 30% were youth. Seventy-three percent of all participants indicated they were collecting public assistance prior to working with Skills.
