Centretown Churches Social Action Committee

The Centretown Churches Social Action Committee, which comprises representatives from 25 churches, was started in 1967 to respond to social needs in the centretown area of Ottawa. Since then CCSAC has undertaken many initiatives on behalf of the poor and isolated in our community. CCSAC's mandate also includes advocacy for social justice, especially for issues relating to poverty. Today, CCSAC's main project is the Centretown Emergency Food Centre (Food Centre). Each year the Food Centre distributes food to some 8,000 disadvantaged people who live in centretown Ottawa, of whom some 1,000 are children. Clients can visit the Food Centre once a month and receive a two-to-three day supply of groceries. The Food Centre operates four days a week. Of the food that the Food Centre distributes, approximately 1/3 is purchased, 1/3 comes from the Ottawa Food Bank and 1/3 is donated by schools, churches, individuals and other organizations.
