The First Open Heart Society of British Columbia (Victoria Heart House B&B)

The First Open Heart Society Of British Columbia is an independent registered charitable non-profit organization dedicated to the support of open heart surgery patients and their families. The society is not affiliated with, or supported by, any other heart organization. The 500 member society is comprised of patients who have under-gone open heart surgery, their spouses and other immediate family members, as well as doctors, nurses and other medical staff involved with the open heart surgery program. The society was formed in 1973 on the initiative of cardiologists and early heart surgery patients to function as a support group for patients awaiting and recovering from heart surgery, and their families. Pre-op and post-op trauma for heart patients about to undergo surgery and their families is eased by talking to those who have also "walked the path".

Community Foundation Of The Napa Valley d/b/a Napa Valley Community Foundation

We mobilize resources, inspire giving, build knowledge and provide leadership on vital community issues to improve the quality of life for all in Napa County. Napa Valley Community Foundation is many things: A public charity. A grantmaking foundation. A philanthropic advisor. A junction for people, resources and ideas. Every day, we link donors to projects that do good in our community. We look for charitable projects that make a lasting difference. Our deep knowledge about specific nonprofits and the charitable sector in Napa Valley comes from research, site visits, due diligence for grants and frequent meetings in the community all conducted by our professional staff. We commit our resources to these projects, and inspire others to do so, as well. We make giving easy, effective and enduring, and we encourage a network of local donors to get involved. We believe there is strength in numbers that by working together, we can help more people more quickly than any one donor acting alone. We cultivate relationships with other funders to create opportunities for various philanthropic groups to collectively support community projects. We multiply the impact of individual givers, pooling resources for the common good in our Community Impact Funds. We help make Napa County stronger, more vibrant, more livable for all who call it home. We serve as a catalyst for positive change in Napa County. Since 1994, the Community Foundation has served as a bridge between philanthropic families and hard-working nonprofit agencies, bringing people, ideas and resources together to enhance the quality of life in the Napa Valley community. From American Canyon to Calistoga, the Community Foundation has distributed more than $27 million in grants to nearly 800 organizations in the last 15 years, and currently serves as the philanthropic partner to 100 individuals, families, nonprofit agencies and corporations in Napa Valley.

The foundation is named in honor of Boris Lawrence Henson, father of Academy Award and Emmy-nominated actress and founder Taraji P. Henson, who suffered mental health challenges without resources or support. Founded in 2018, within a short time, BLHF has built its reputation on the promise of providing trusted referrals and demonstrating a deep understanding of the population health of communities of color. Through timely and relevant programming and awareness campaigns, it is the hope that mental health will become a known quantity within Black communities, helping the Foundation to achieve a critical mass of Black self-care advocates and allies nationwide. Through a myriad of corporate partnerships, BLHF encourages mental wellness; raises awareness of the stigma and the use of stigmatizing language when referring to mental illness; provides mental health resources and support, offers scholarships to Black students who seek a career in the mental health field; extends mental health services to young people in underserved schools and communities, combats recidivism and supports re-entry for returning citizens.
