Piedmont Environmental Council

The Piedmont Environmental Council works to safeguard the landscape, communities and heritage of Virginia's Piedmont by involving citizens in related public policy and land conservation. PEC's service area encompasses nine counties of the Piedmont. Our work integrates four mutually interdependent goals and programs:   *Better Define the Piedmont- PEC is creating a sense of place in our communities through engaging activities and the identification and support of our unique assets and history.  * Protect What Can Be Protected: Land Conservation & Watershed Protection - We are protecting threatened land and natural and cultural resources as efficiently as possible through an aggressive and multi-tiered land conservation program.  *Respond to the Forces of Change: Land Use and Transportation- We consistently promote good planning to reduce threats to our region, address issues of local importance, and surmount individual pressures on our historic landscape.  *Direct Growth to the Right Places - We are helping visualize a better future by presenting positive solutions to the problems caused by poorly planned development. These concrete principles recognize that growth is inevitable, but that we can effectively manage the population and economic growth coming to this region and create healthy communities to live, work and play.  PEC also provides direct assistance to those working on parallel missions in neighboring counties. PEC is a founding member and fiscal sponsor for the Coalition for Smarter Growth, an organization extending a parallel mission in Washington DC. PEC also serves as fiscal sponsor for the Shenandoah Valley Network. Additionally, PEC coordinates with many partners across the Commonwealth to address regional issues that affect the Piedmont directly.

Hamilton Literacy Council

Approximately 60% of the adult population in Hamilton do not have the literacy skills needed to meet the everyday demands at home, work and in the community. We help English-speaking adults to improve their basic (grade 1-grade 5) reading, writing and math skills through the work of trained, volunteer tutors. The student and tutor pair meet for approximately 4 hours per week. We also provide the option of Small Group instruction where 5-8 students learn basic skills in a class setting. Small Groups meet 9 hours per week.

Oldman Watershed Council

The Oldman Watershed Council, or OWC, is a community-based, not-for-profit that works with everyone to find practical solutions to environmental challenges that impact us all. People depend on a healthy environment but we also need a healthy economy and we have social and cultural needs too. Everything is connected so we must work together to make trade-offs, solve problems, plan for the future and have the quality of life we want right now. It takes time and effort to work collaboratively but OWC is building a new way of managing our water and land where we all do our part, work together and think long term. We believe it's worth the investment.

Edmonton Heritage Council

The Edmonton Heritage Council is an important voice and narrator of Edmonton's memory. We're an active and provocative link between citizens, historians, curators, educators, business and government: everyone who seeks to to understand how our history meets our future. Here's how we're doing this: - Rolling out a strategy for Edmonton's heritage and memory organizations to innovate and work collaboratively to increase their service to citizens and society - Provide grants to innovative heritage organizations and projects - Building Edmonton Maps Heritage, an online place for Edmontonians to "put themselves on the map" - Creating a city museum-- eventually a facility, but for now we've launched the Edmonton City as Museum Project to engage and connect Edmontonians to less known aspects of their city's heritage.

Berkeley Neighborhoods Council

The Berkeley Neighborhoods Council (BNC) is a coalition of neighborhood groups of residents from all parts of Berkeley who have come together over such issues as development, traffic, crime, parks and open space, disaster preparedness, and the environment. Since launching this website and publishing an electronic newsletter we have grown significantly. However, we must continue on that path if we are to be effective in giving neighborhoods a voice that will be heard, now and into the future. Small steps carried out consistently by individuals make a real difference that eventually will turn into an enormous impact. BNC is dedicated to becoming a voice for positive change. Some elected City of Berkeley officials have stated there are only a handful of individuals who oppose everything. That's not true, and BNC doesn't want to be, or even seem to be, only naysayers. BNC strives to present information that can be relied upon to be credible. Spot an error, or any problem whatsoever, or if you disagree, let us know. Better yet, step right in and join the conversation!
