We are fundraising to remodel Miriam’s House, a unique non profit sober living home for women with children.
Tucked away in a busy corner of West Los Angeles is a 15 bedroom converted convent called Miriam’s House. A building that once housed nuns in the 50’s, has been providing sober living to low income mothers and their children since 2007.
The opioid epidemic and the war on drugs have taken an incredible toll on Americans and yet the response in care for women has been slow to evolve. In that vacuum, Miriam’s House has been quietly transforming the lives of hundreds of women and reuniting families by providing a highly structured, social services based program that starts with the promise of housing for a year. Miriam’s House has effectively created a village for women to recover and achieve long term sobriety. All of this, while reunifying them with their children, helping to end the inter generational cycle of poverty and addiction.
Almost 100% of the women who enter our program have experienced homelessness and have co occurring mental health needs. Their children, once reunified, also have special needs relating to trauma and development. We believe that every woman in recovery deserves the chance to change their lives and that every family impacted by addiction deserves a safe environment that will allow them to heal.
After an enormous effort and 15 years of leasing this magical place, we have successfully purchased the property and we couldn’t be more thrilled! It’s an exciting new chapter for our organization and the families that call us home.
Now we are ready to begin the next part of our journey with a much needed upgrade and remodel to this dated and worn property. This is where you, our beloved community, comes in. While Miriam’s House is filled with warmth, it hasn’t been updated since 2007 and still has many original features dating back to 1957. We need a long list of changes including a new kitchen, an upgraded electrical system, and top to bottom windows. With fifteen bedrooms and almost 6,000 SQ FT of living space, there is no shortage of challenges and opportunities to make this home the best possible place for families in recovery.
We invite you to make a donation that will help us reimagine Miriam’s House for the next several hundred families and as a beacon of hope for women in recovery everywhere.
