Hope For Hs

Meeting since February 2014, Hope for HS is the first US-based, face-to-face support group for patients with Hidradenitis Suppurativa, their loved ones, and caregivers with meetings that began at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan and have expanded to Penn State Medical Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania, Montefiore Hospital in Bronx, New York and rotating among the campuses of University of North Carolina and Duke University in the Research Triangle area of North Carolina. Hope for HS offers physician presence at each support group meeting, allowing patients to gain invaluable accurate information about their condition, current treatment options, and research. Our meetings are free and everyone is welcome, regardless of where (or if) you are being treated. Patients are also able to make connections with other HS sufferers to share stories, provide support, and realize they are not alone. Through these support group meetings, we have developed a network of patients and physicians that continually seek and develop opportunities to raise awareness, educate the public, and advocate for research into Hidradenitis Suppurativa.

Outreach Uganda

Outreach Uganda is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization headquartered in Colorado and dedicated to helping empower Ugandans, especially women and children, to rise out of poverty. To do this, we work with village groups in Uganda to bring hope and improve lives, especially in the areas of education, women's empowerment, and self-sufficiency through job creation. Initially, our village groups help support themselves and their families through sales of paper beaded jewelry and other craft items. The beaders save money from their bead sales so they can then start own group or individual businesses to supplement their income and eventually we hope it will be their main source of income. Micro-credit loans from their group's internal revolving loan fund provides additional help for the ladies to either start businesses or further expand their existing businesses to a level that will help them rise above poverty. As an organization, we emphasize to both our donors and our clients that we believe in truly empowering those we help. In everything we do, we seek to be a partner with those we serve so that they do not become dependent on us, and so that we do not take away their spirit of wanting to help themselves. We believe that income-generation of the women, and education of the children is the way that families can truly become empowered. But it is essential to take a holistic approach and focus on multiple areas, all of which impact the woman's income-generation potential. For instance, a woman must be relatively healthy to be a successful business owner. Therefore, we must also help a woman address issues of health. For many of our women in northern Uganda, agriculture and the raising of cash crops will be key to their income generation potential. Therefore, agricultural issues, water issues and even land access and rights become important areas to address.

EMORY UNIVERSITY - ATLANTA - 30322-4250

Emory University's mission is to create, preserve, teach, and apply knowledge in the service of humanity. To fulfill this mission, the University supports the full range of scholarship, from undergraduate to advanced graduate and professional instruction, and from basic research to its application in public service. While being a comprehensive research university, Emory limits its academic scope to those fields in which, by virtue of its history and location, it can excel. Hence its academic programs focus on the arts and sciences, business, law, theology, and the health professions. These disciplines are unified by their devotion to liberal learning; by cooperative interdisciplinary programs; and by the common pursuit of intellectual distinction. The Emory community is open to all who meet its high standards of intelligence, competence, and integrity. It welcomes a diversity of ethnic, cultural, socioeconomic, religious, national, and international backgrounds, believing that the intellectual and social energy that results from such diversity is a primary asset of the University. In keeping with the demand that teaching, learning, research, and service be measured by high standards of integrity and excellence, and believing that each person and every level of scholarly activity should be valued on its own merits, the University aims to imbue scholarship at Emory with A commitment to humane teaching and mentorship and a respectful interaction among faculty, students, and staff; Open disciplinary boundaries that encourage integrative teaching, research, and scholarship; A commitment to use knowledge to improve human well-being; and A global perspective on the human condition. The University, founded by the Methodist Episcopal Church, cherishes its historical affiliation with the United Methodist Church. While Emory's programs are today entirely nonsectarian (except for those at the Candler School of Theology), the University has derived from this heritage the conviction that education can be a strong moral force in both society and the lives of its individual members.

The Need Lack of skills training opportunities among young women is a common issue in Embul Bul Ward, Ngong, Kajiado County and in Kieni Nyeri County often, due to socio norms, lack of employment opportunities and financial crisis, they are unable to undertake vocational and skill trainings in the expensive training centers. Young women most of who are high school leavers and drop outs depend on housekeeping, , collecting fodder and collecting firewood to earn income. They do casual labor work that produce poor earning which is not sufficient to arrange meal twice daily. This impact on their health and that of their children. Due to lack of vocational training facilities in Embul Bul Ward, Ngong, Kajiado County and Kieni in Nyeri County these young women are never offered these techniques to create their micro enterprises in a profitable manner. It on this background that Future Adventure resolved take a patriotic challenge to initiate various skills training programmes to help these young women who are struggling with their daily lives. This programme include vocational and skills development and will be reaching to these young women with appropriate community mobilization and capacity building. We are offering tailoring and dressing making, beauty techniques and cooking but the courses will be expanded every year Women play an active role in day to day survival of the poorer communities in these villages. They bear the double burden of work in the house and out of the house. The low rate of literacy in the women of disadvantaged part of the community. They do not have any other skill to earning. There is increasing risk for scarcity of livelihood and employment in the region. There are few and unevenly distributed technical vocational training centres. Kenya has over 700 technical vocational training centres to serve a country of 50 Million people which include; four national polytechnics, one technical teachers college, about 35 technical training institutes, and over 600 youth polytechnics (commonly refered to as village polytechnics) which are mostly concentrated in economically endowed counties and almost non-existent in arid and semi-arid areas like Kajiado and Kieni Sub- County There is a consistent decline in the quality of training offered in training centres as a result of declining number of quality trainers and a lack of modern and efficient machine and equipment. There is a lack of relevance in skills taught that match with occupational and social realities present in today's economy. Some training centres continue to teach skills that no longer have a market and ignore those that do have and this is the need Future Adventure is addressing.

Viethope

VietHope was founded in 2002 by a group of university students in the Boston area. Coming together from all corners of the U.S. and the world, they shared a common idealism and energy. What began as an informal discussion about Vietnam evolved into a circle of friendship. Within this circle, our founders shared with each other their dreams for Vietnam, and their desire to make a difference in the lives of everyday people there. Thus VietHope was born as a dedication to youth and to Vietnam’s development. VietHope’s founders believed that development must be based on long-term and sustainable results, and that people and human capital development are necessary for such results. VietHope shares the dream that every child in Vietnam will grow up with the opportunity to reach his or her full potential. Therefore, our mission is to empower financially disadvantaged students in Vietnam to access education and rise out of poverty. With our help, these students will beat the odds. They will create a better world for themselves, their families and their communities.

We invite and teach our students to do the same, and we ask each community member to learn, lead and serve. That's the very essence of our faith and our academic pursuits. We believe that people who develop compassionate hearts and critical minds can transform the world.  At the center of the University's leadership is the Office for Mission and Rector. Its role is simple: To help each of us live and learn together, and to grow in our faith to make our communities better. That's what it means to be Marianist. That's what it means to be a part of the University of Dayton community.
