You Gotta Believe - Adopting Older Kids and Youth

YGB specializes in finding permanent families for young adults, teens, and pre-teens in foster care. We believe that no child should age out of the foster care system without the support and love of a family. Whether that means helping youth reconnect to their families of origin, to other people who have played a role in their lives, or to new families that will make a new commitment to be there for life. We recruit, train, certify and license parents who are willing to make an unconditional lifetime commitment. Likewise, we commit to providing ongoing support for our families for as long as they need. To honor his legacy, Discovery Inc. established the The Willie Garson Fund at You Gotta Believe to support our work of connecting every child in foster care to a loving family that commits to being there for life. The fund directly supports our Nobody Ages Out initiative, providing the services and resources needed to ensure their profound journey to becoming a family is a success.

Girls Gotta Run Foundation

The Girls Gotta Run Foundation, Inc. is an all volunteer charitable organization founded in 2006 to raise funds to provide support to impoverished Ethiopian girls who are training to become professional runners. Running is more than a sport for girls and women in Ethiopia. It empowers them to stay in school, avoid early marriage and childbirth, and gain personal independence and economic self-sufficiency. GGRF provides funds for the purchase of athletic shoes, training uniforms, food (“calorie money”) and other training-related expenses, such as transportation to and from training areas and competitions, as well as to subsidize coaches’ salaries.  GGRF was inspired by the December 2005 Washington Post(http://www.washingtonpost.com/) article by Emily Wax called "Facing Servitude, Ethiopian Girls Run for a Better Life." (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/28/AR2005122801369.html)    Wax reported, “In Ethiopia, getting an education is a true marathon. Girls’ enrollment is among the lowest in the world and women and girls are more likely to die in childbirth than reach sixth grade…” She also noted that Ethiopia has the highest rate of vaginal fistulas in the world and one of the largest caseloads of AIDS, forcing many girls to quit school to care for sick or widowed relatives. Today, because “seven of the 10 top-earning athletes in Ethiopia are women,” some girls and their parents have begun to see careers as professional runners as viable options in a country where “girls as young as 12 can be sold as brides by parents desperate for dowry payments.” Many who train in order to stay in school and keep their options open can, with the help of others who care, overcome many of the obstacles in their way. GGRF was founded to assist them.

Children Believe

Jamie is one sponsor who saw the results of his sponsorship when he met his sponsored child in Ethiopia. "For us, the decision to sponsor Mestewet was easy. Today, she is a beautiful, bright and healthy little girl from Ethiopia. Not long ago I was able to visit Mestewet while stationed with the Canadian Forces in Addis Ababa. As the CCFC worker and I arrived at Mestewet’s mud-walled, thatch-roofed home, a smiling girl waved and excitedly announced our arrival to her mother. We sat in the darkness of their windowless home. They had nothing except one table and a few mattresses. Yet in Ethiopian tradition, Mestewet’s family welcomed us and gave us everything they had – including freshly roasted coffee! I was touched to see my family’s photo in amongst their few belongings. My mother had sent Mestewet some photos and I could see how proud she was to show her friends the pictures of her Canadian sponsors." CCFC matches Canadians with children in need. Please donate now.
